Street Preaching in LA, July 24, 2009

John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

When I first came to Bible Baptist Church, I was talking to Sis. Sunny, and she said that they did street preaching, and that it is really encouraging. At the time, I was a bit down, so I was like, "Really? Street preaching encouraging...?"

During street preaching, the men are usually preaching aloud, holding up scripture signs, and passing out tracts to those who pass by, while the women are passing out tracts, CD's, and pamphlets near the exits of supermarkets.

This past Friday, in LA, at Hannam Chain, Pastor Kim started the preaching. At the exit of Hannam, Sis. Esther and I were passing out tracts and pamphlets in Korean, English, and Spanish.

A flustered security guard was yelling at the customers in the car. "Go, go, go." "Come on, get going!" He was trying to get the traffic flowing because the traffic was backing up. A Hispanic man had parked right in front of the store and had just gone in; when he came out, the security guard yelled at him, "You're not supposed to park in front of the store!" Meanwhile, Sis. Esther and I were giving out tracts. Already frustrated, the security guard stomped up to Sis. Esther and said, "You can't do that here. You have to stop."

Open-Air Meetings PDF Print E-mail

I received the following article from a website. Here are some important points on how God uses street-preaching for His glory. Who said that street-preaching is not proper for a Christian? It is a necessity in every church! R.A. Torrey strongly believed in street-preaching. While our church always preached out on the streets, several times we came across students from Biola University criticizing and condemning our street-preaching. Those people do not even realize that their founder R.A. Torrey taught street-preaching in his lectures. How shocking it is to see that apostasy quickly arose in Biola University less than 100 years! They should have at least taken a look at R.A. Torrey's lectures, like this one:

OPEN-AIR MEETINGS

I. Their importance and advantages.

1. They are Scriptural. Jesus said, "Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind." Every great preacher of the Bible was an open-air preacher. Peter was an open-air preacher, Paul was an open-air preacher, and so were Elijah, Moses and Ezra. More important than all, Jesus Christ Himself was an open-air preacher, and preached for the most part out of doors. Every great sermon recorded in the Bible was preached in the open air; the sermon on the Day of Pentecost, the Sermon on the Mount, the sermon on Mars Hill, etc. In this country we have an idea that open-air preaching is for those who cannot get any other place to speak, but across the water they look at it quite differently. Some of the most eminent preachers of Great Britain preach in the open air.

The Almost-Saved Skeptic PDF Print E-mail
Written by Geneha Kim

Our church was preaching on the streets of Tustin, California.  I saw one young person passing by, and I handed him a Chick tract.  He looked at the tract with a funny look.  Rather than letting him go away, I quickly asked him, "If you were to die right now, are you sure you are going to Heaven after you die?"  He gave me a hesitant look and replied there were many religions and beliefs.  I answered my belief was right not because of my church, religion, or philosophy, but because of the Bible.  Why do I believe there is a hell?  Why do I believe Jesus is God?  Why do I believe in the existence of God?  The solution to all questions is because the Bible says so.  The final authority is not by a certain religion, philosophy, scholar, or education.  The final authority is the Bible.

Of course, the young man was skeptical.  So, I answered him with the authority of the Bible.  I gave him examples of mathematical probabilities, medical proofs, and scientific facts, which backed up the Bible and confounded the intellect of man.  Like one verse said, "The foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of men."  I told that skeptic how can he trust himself more than the Bible when mankind always makes mistakes, rather than the Bible.  The skeptic was silent, but he was still not under conviction.  I said to him, "Since you do not have any arguments to make, I will tell you about the gospel."  The skeptic nodded his head.  What a chance!  So, I told him the whole gospel about hell, God's love, repentance, and salvation.  After I gave the gospel, I asked the skeptic, "Would you like to ask Christ to save your soul?"  He said that he was not quite ready to believe all that I said.

Lost Baptists Know the Gospel PDF Print E-mail
Written by Geneha Kim

The streets of Los Angeles is my favorite place to preach.  The one place where we were preaching at is in front of Los Angeles Korean Baptist church.  Like many Southern Korean Baptist churches, they will talk about Jesus and give the sinner's prayer, but their members do not see the clear message of salvation.  I saw four teenagers, who attended that church, walk by the street.  I gave them tracts and asked them if they knew they were going to Heaven after death.  Of course, like many Southern Baptists, they answered, "Yes."  I asked them, "How do you get to Heaven?"  They gave me all the answers that they learned from a typical Southern Baptist church.  "You believe Jesus is the Son of God."  "You ask God for forgiveness of sins."  "You must say the sinner's prayer."  "You accept Jesus in your heart."  I told them that all religions do the same things, but they are not going to Heaven.  As for "accepting Jesus in your heart" business, I asked them what did they mean by that term, because many religions say they do that as well, but do not actually accept Jesus in their hearts.  (There was an incident when my father asked a Catholic about how to enter Heaven.  The Catholic said it was by accepting Jesus in the heart.  But he later said it was by good works!)  The four teens could not explain about how to get to Heaven.

Some Teens Will Get Saved and Some Will Mock PDF Print E-mail
Written by Geneha Kim

While I was preaching the gospel on the street, a few teenagers with their skateboards approached me.  I handed them gospel tracts, and one of them asked me, "What are you @%** doing?"  I ignored his cussing and replied that we were showing people how to get to Heaven and to escape from Hell.  The teenagers laughed at me, and I warned them about how dreadful Hell will be for them throughout eternity.  They laughed, and one of them tore the tract to pieces.  They went away with their skateboards while mocking me.  I preached at them about God recording those sins at the Judgment and they would be without excuse.  About ten minutes later, they returned and brought an adult with them.  I thought the teenagers brought the adult to stop our street preaching, but thank God, they just passed us by and mocked us.

I continued preaching at the street corners, but those teenagers went across the street and kept cussing loudly.  Of course, my voice was louder and clearer than theirs, so their screams did not bother me a bit.
